Advance Word, Advance Love for ROCKETSHIP PARK's Cakes & Cookies

From the bunch of CDs the guys at Serious Business sent us some months ago, by bands we never had the pleasure of listening before on the other side of the pond, one stood up from the rest (if we exclude the ones by the amazing Benji Cossa, whose records we listened over and over). That record was Rocketship Park’s “Off and Away“. Rocketship Park is the brainchild of the multi-instrumentalist, song-man, producer, vocalist, and auteur Josh Kaufman, and he returns next June 27th with his new record, “Cakes and Cookies”, which you can already stream in its entirety after the jump. First 300 orders come with a limited edition (hand numbered and letter-pressed) 7″ and a homemade cookie/sweet treat that should be as delicious as the finely crafted pop gems you can listen to on the record. Guests on “Cakes and Cookies” include Dawn Landes and The National’s Bryan Devendorf!

You can also download the track Fast Friends for free, clicking the link below.

Rocketship Park: Austin Music Weekly's 5th Street Session.

Josh Kaufman recently shared the following on his tumblr page.

Back in March Sam Cohen and i were down at South by Southwest playing a lot of music together.  One afternoon we sat on his cousin Pierre’s porch and tried to figure out George Harrison guitar lines after and before taco times.  Mostly we were playing Yellowbirds shows!  It was a blast.  Here is a video of a Rocketship Park song called “Stuck w/ Me” from our upcoming record “Cakes & Cookies”.  This was made minutes after arriving in Austin, Texas for the festival.  That’s my grandson Mr. Sam playing bubble guitar and Mr. Me on the strumble guitar.

Buy some Rocketship Park music as a Passover or Easter gift to me and yourself!

This same session yielded a killer version of the Yellowbirds song "the Rest of My Life" which you will watch now.

Higgins Play Show

Hello Friends, In an attempt to get in touch with you all about things involving the band Higgins, I am sending out this first ever Higgins musics email! Yes folks, we have an email entirely devoted to everyone’s favorite, tastefully not in your face, rock outfit. So lets not make a big deal about it and get to the meat of this thing.

Firstly, We are playing our first show in almost a year tomorrow night. 8pm at the Cakeshop in NYC. This is very exiting for us because we are playing with my favorite new band Yellowbirds. Yellowbirds are Incredible and we are honored that they have asked us to play their Record Release Show. Also, BK and Josh (of Higgins fame) will be playing with Yellowbirds. Eh… Eh…

Secondly, I have decided that the new Higgins record is done. Its not mixed completely yet and though I have a concept, not a lick of the artwork has been done… But I will be tracking no more and I am proud to say that Serious Business Records will open its arms to us once more and lob it out in a couple of months. There will be a few digital download whistle wetters before the “full release”… The album will be entitled “Straight A’s” in honor of my current scholastic pursuits. Its full of all the things that make us us and a few new twists and “are they really doing this?” moments. It also features a bunch of guests, old and new friends on various instruments. I will keep you posted on the latest with that…

Lastly, If you don’t want to get these updates, let me know and I’ll take you off this list. Otherwise, I hope you all are doing great and enjoying this ass kicking winter.

Sincerely, KP Keep an eye out for the new Rocketship Park record “Cakes and Cookies” on Serious Business Records and the new Marshmallow Coast record “Seniors Juniors Strikes Back” on HHBTM. Great F’ng records from great F’ng folks coming soon. Oh and Yellowbirds “The Color” on Royal Potato Family… of course
Kevin Fish (KP)

LIFEGUARDS: Waving at the Astronauts

LP / CD / digital out Feb 15th, 2011 from Serious Business and Ernest Jenning.

Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices are LIFEGUARDS. The two first worked together outside of the GBV realm on the 1999 fan-classic Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Dept, which included "Do Something Real" the anthemic theme to Steven Soderbergh's film Full Frontal. Their debut release as Lifeguards, Mist King Urth, emerged in 2002 on Pollard's own Fading Captain Series label to fervent fan approval. In 2010 Pollard and Gillard reconvened for the first time since the end of GBV in 2004 to create the astounding follow up: Waving at the Astronauts. Gillard wrote and recorded 10 complex and beautiful instrumentals at home then sent the finished compositions off to Pollard who graced the tracks with some of the most unforgettable melodies and strangely poetic lyrics of his career. In May 2010, Pollard recorded his vocals with Gillard and Travis Harrison at Serious Business Music in NYC where drums and overdubs were added and the record was mixed.

From the ragged and triumphant rock masterpiece "Paradise Is Not So Bad," to the chugging "Sexless Auto" and the off-kilter ramble of "What Am I," this is the latest gem from a songwriting team whose limits are larger than any arena you might try and squeeze them into.

While there are no Lifeguards shows on the table at this point, you can catch both Bob and Doug in one night when Gillard opens for GBV on New Year's Eve at New York's Irving Plaza!

Nearly sold out, the final copies of the album's first 7" single "Product Head b/w Naught Windsor" are available right now.
