The Octagon are the new underground kings of the lo-fi. This free EPArm Brain Heart and Liver is a free prequel to 2010's vinyl epic Warm Love and Cool Dreams Forever. The songs are life-scale, poetic, hummable chunks of raw rock and roll classicism.
Recorded February 2009 at our practice space. Mixed by Travis Harrison, mastered by Harris Newman. Tracks 1,2, 4 and 5 written by Zachary Mexico; track 3 by Will Glass.
Zachary Mexico - Guitar, Vocals. Also Wurlitzer.
The Bunny - Bass, Vocals.
Will Glass - Drums, Vocals. Also Classical Guitar.
Special Guests:
Joseph Petrucelli, Kaben Schwartz, and Edward Hale - Wizard Laughter. J.P. also sings back-up on 'Reiki'.
"The Octagon's new free digital EP (http://bit.ly/8fA2o) is a great listen. As usual, the band sounds gritty, poetic, sad, real."
-Hank Shteamer, TimeOutNY/DarkForcesSwing via Twitter.
The Octagon channel all the best parts of the post-punk sound. Their songs are melodic, well written, and executed with taste and restraint. While referencing greats like Pavement and Dinosaur Jr. The Octagon's music doesn't sound stale or knocked off. Their new EP has enough lo-fi swagger and modern sensibility to place them at the forefront of the current crop of break-out bands. Certainly a band to watch this fall heading into what promises to be another over-saturated CMJ season. Stark Magazine Online
"very recommended" -david malitz (washington post) via twitter
"Bringing to mind the now sadly-defunct Oxford Collapse, and also possibly the Feelies if they smoked pot instead of blue flake cocaine, Arm Brain Heart and Liver is full of drony, infectious pop punk to keep you warm as winter sets in. Think Japandroids, but, ya know, better." I'm Into CB
"Dig the raw rockin' sounds of NYC's The Octagon, whose latest EP "Arm Brain Heart and Liver" (released in September on SeriousBusiness) just kicks ass for five straight songs." Waved Rumor
