New York songman Benji Cossa was born on July 29th, 1976. His songs are sincere, poetic and hook-heavy, deploying Brill Building pop-classicism, along with genuine fearlessness, immediacy, intimacy. In his life he's written over six-hundred gems, and he's captured most of them on his 4-track cassette machine. On record and in person, Cossa's unmistakable singing voice proves itself as the most singular entertainer's weapon the man wields, a supple and full-toned song-beam that fills a room or a tape with warmth and credibility.

In the 90s, Mr. Cossa cut his teeth writing and 4-tracking beloved personalized mix-tapes for friends. His new double-album II captures the spirit of a chock-full, lovingly-dubbed C-90, titles scrawled on a tray card, mysteries found and solved on each play. While the beats and strums of II were made with a cadre of tight players in producer Travis Harrison's Serious Business Music recording studio in NYC, Cossa preserves the homespun spirit that defines all his work. This ambitious song suite is a 34-song, 90-minute aural jambalaya of hit-and-run miracles. Mr.Cossa somehow bends time and space and thus the nearly-insane run-time ofII flies by in a broken heartbeat. If you're not prepared to take the whole journey in a sitting, this record was designed to be consumed in smaller chunks too; there are two halves, or six symmetrical vinyl-sides, or 34 individual nuggets.

While II's tale-of-the-tape is impressive, it's laser-beam thematic focus establishes it as much more than a hodge-podge of winsome pop songs. On every track, Cossa evaluates the intricacies of relationships. II address both the heights and challenges of love, warts and all; one-on-one, so to speak. It can be funny, as on “Two Times,” or achingly sad, like “Same Old.” One hears yearning amidst playfulness, as on the falsetto-enriched "You Were Made to Tempt Me," which harkens to Frankie Valli, or "The Invisible Man" where Cossa croons "you don't appreciate me baby" atop a peppy and hard-driving bed of choogling acoustic guitars. There's lust, boredom, laughter, tears, doubt, contentedness, bliss and guilt all embedded between Cossa's lines of perfect melody.

II is Benji Cossa's third album of all-new recordings amongst a vast discography of archival compilations. It is both a strong point of entry for the Cossa-neophyte and a true feast for his longtime admirers. Featured players include drummer-producer Travis Harrison, three-quarters of psych-killers Yellowbirds in Brian Kantor, Annie Nero and Josh Kaufman, graphic artist/DFA alum Devin Flynn, world's-greatest-saxman Matt Moon, Higgins slowhand Kevin Fish, Two Man Gentlemen Band bassist The Councilman Fuller Condon, Bambi Kino's Erik Paparazzi and bassman Chris Buckridge. Oh yeah, and Cossa is pronounced KOH-sah, by the way.

These are songs people can take with them and use for their entire lives. Five years elapsed between the time of the first sessions and the eventual release date. This passing of time feels like a very natural thing. Benji Cossa's music is timeless.

BENJI COSSA: II

Recorded at Serious Business Music, NYC 2009-2013

Produced by Travis Harrison and Benji Cossa

Mastered by Jamal Ruhe at West West Side Music

Songwriter Benji Cossa, dubbed "King of Song" in the early-00's, lives up to this coronation on his new album II, a 34-song, 90+ minute aural jambalaya of hit-and-run miracles. Every song is an imaginary hit.

Benji Cossa : II

Light In The Dark

There's a light in the dark

There's an end to the dream

There's a full flowing heart

And a red running stream

Though I wanted to stay there

Though I wanted to cling

There's a light in the dark

There's an end to the dream

So take off your dress

And pull up the sheets

There's a full flowing heart

And a red running stream

Diamond Dove

If I was your diamond dove

Sitting in a brass cage

If I was your diamond dove

with my head between the bars I'll wait

I wouldn't want to fly away

If I was your diamond dove I'd coo your name the same way

If I was your diamond dove

I'd have a ring around my eye

If I was your diamond dove

I'd sing until the day I die

On paper is where I'll lie

If I was your diamond dove I'd coo your name the way

If I was your diamond dove

I'd look just like a pigeon's son

If I was your diamond dove

You'd only have to listen once

To hear how the diamond's cut

If I was your diamond dove I'd coo your name the same way.

Wherdjyagó?

Where did you go?

I haven't seen you around before.

Oh, I don't know where she went

We had a fight

It wasn't so nice

I got up an left

Where'd I go next?

I should have gone to bed

But I went out instead

I thought I'd cool off my head

and gather some sense

But that's not how it went

Because the moment I saw her

It turned my mind over

And over again

Where did you go?

I haven't seen you around before.

Oh, I don't know where she went

Eyes like lightning

Dressed like a rain cloud

Ready to burst

And when she moved through the room

That rhythmic boom

Was like a juju curse

Then somebody saw me at the edge of the bar

He said “Guy, you've gone a little too far

You should leave her alone

'Cause you've got someone at home

And that woman, she's no good

Though she looks like a lady should

And if you want trouble keep searching and saying:

Where did you go?

I haven't seen you around before.

Oh, I don't know where she went”

New Flowers

Like wildflowers

Pretty People are blooming

All kinds of hued ones

You can pick and choose them

And if you lose one

There's more to choose

There are new flowers blooming everywhere

Below your back

Under your feet

Through the cracks

In the street

Butterflies

Hummingbirds

And bees

Have to get out and greet all those

Wildflowers

Like pretty People they're blooming

All kinds of hued ones

You can pick and choose them

And if you lose one

There's more to choose

There are new flowers blooming everywhere

They drink the rain

Reflect the sun

Put on a show

For everyone

Then the next ones will come when all those

Wildflowers

Like pretty People they're blooming

All kinds of hued ones

You can pick and choose them

And if you lose one

There's more to choose

There are new flowers blooming everywhere

The Prettiest Thing

You are the prettiest thing I've ever seen in my whole life

The way that you look, is not the hook though it's very nice

It's so much more and that so much more I like

You are the prettiest thing I've ever seen in my whole life

You remind me that sometimes I have a light in my life

So that I can be as pretty as you are to me

and you could be mine

Made to Tempt Me

You were made to tempt me

Now I'm back and coming home

You were made to tempt me

You didn't fool me for long

Hide a tear and feign a smile

I doubted your love

Biting ankles and digging lawns

I was barking like a dog

You were made to tempt me

Now I'm back and coming home

You were made to tempt me

You didn't fool me for long

Pour on the charm

I know what's mine

Oh, no you won't

Get me this time

You were made to tempt me

Now I'm back and coming home

You were made to tempt me

You didn't fool me for long

The Invisible Man

Every time I look around

You've got a new sound

Look what's coming out your mouth now

Put-downs now

So don't even take the time

Just to be a little kind

Then I won't have to wonder

if you'll ever change your mind

You don't appreciate me, baby

And it isn't fair

You don't appreciate me, baby

Do you really care?

You don't appreciate me, baby

I'm you're invisible man

So make it easy

And leave me

I'm not strong enough

That's why you need me

So don't even take the time

Just to be a little kind

Then I won't have to wonder

if you'll ever change your mind

You don't appreciate me, baby

And it isn't fair

You don't appreciate me, baby

Do you even care?

You don't appreciate me, baby

I'm your invisible man

Every time I get the feeling that I don't belong

Every time I get the feeling that I might be wrong

You're gone

You don't appreciate me, baby

Do you really care?

You don't appreciate me, baby

And it isn't fair

You don't appreciate me, baby

It's like I wasn't even there

You don't appreciate me, baby

I'm your invisible Man

Dance With Your Woman

Why don't you dance with your woman?

She's out having fun

With someone

Who's not you

Is there something wrong with me

For not dancing with my lady?

You should be kind to your lady

She's there for you

And always do what you say

It's OK

Some other time

I'll tell her she's mine

There-there's a baby

I'll see you later

I'll be dancing by myself

Taking it easy

Smooth in my living room

New memories will come true

For me and you

You should take nothing for granted

Keep her close

Care for most

Don't overdose

Please don't boast

Because your love always shows

Are you coming home?

I'm all alone.

Don't Let Her

Don't let her bring you down

Don't let her use up all you have

Don't let her live inside your mind

Don't let her take you for a ride

Don't let her drive you mad

Don't let her turn you inside out

Don't let her monitor your moves

Don't let her take your confidence

Don't let her make you second guess

Don't let her lose what you love best

Don't let her steal your dignity

Don't let her catch you weakening

Don't let her play off your hand

Don't let her choose what's best for you

Don't let her tell you what to do

Don't let her burn your fire out

Don't let her poison near your mouth

Don't let her mood effect your dream

Don't take her talk too seriously

Don't let her feed off your fear

Don't let her throw your garbage back

Don't let her veer you off your track

Don't let her be your enemy

Me I Me

Me I me I me

You e you e you

Sometimes we cry

Why why o why

Look at me

Look at you downhearted

I don't know how

I don't know why we started

But I'm sorry for it

Me I me I me

You e you e you

Sometimes we cry

Why why o why

Take breath

Take it easy on me

What I did, what you did, what happened, what we both said

I can relate, too

I don't blame you

Me I me I me

You e you e you

Sometimes we cry

Why why o why

Sometimes we cry

Then we leave it all behind

Sometimes we cry

Because something's got into our mind

And we're washing it out our eyes

Me I me I me

You e you e you

Sometimes we cry

Why why o why

Rosalyn

I bought a rose for Rosalyn

I thought she just might take it, too

Why don't we slip inside your vase

I'll make a bouquet out of you

Every morning

That's when the light starts growing

In the evening

Even the sky is rosy

Rosalyn

There's a way about you

Rosalyn

A kind of glow surrounds you

Rosalyn

When I put my arms around you

We're standing in a garden turning to stone

I put a candle on the table

Why don't you turn your face to me?

I've seen you bloom in the middle of the night

And why you wilt is a mystery

Every morning

That's when the light starts growing

In the evening

Even the sky is rosy

Rosalyn

There's an aire about you

Rosalyn

A kind of glow surrounds you

Rosalyn

When I put my arms around you

We're standing in a garden turning to stone

Sumpthin' Goin' Ahn

You've got something going on

Let me tell you about the way you look: so fine

Sometimes it really blows my mind

What a find – you're heavenly

What did I do to get you to me?

You've got something going on

Can I keep this pretty pearl

The one girl in all the world

Who lets me in where no one can?

When I hold you I'm your man

You've got something going on

What I don't know

I don't wanna know

Do I wanna know?

Let me lie in the love you lave me

You've got something going on

Cast your spell and keep me fooled

Because I'm so in love with you

I believe you'll never go

And I trust you'll always know

That there's nobody else above you

So I lift my life to love you

You've got something going on

Annie Delia

Annie Delia

Come on home

Annie Delia

Don't be alone

You're such a fine thing

Wish you were my thing

You're truly something

I could surely hold

And when we wake up

Long after sunup

We'll spend the day

Doing whatever we want

And if you're if you're scared

Don't be scared, Annie

You've got a place to rest

And a place to grow

And if you're worried

Don't be worried, Annie

All you have to do

Is come on home

Then you and I

Will all so satisfied with each other

Annie Delia

Come on home

And I'm going to miss you so much

If you choose to go

Since You've Been Around

Since you've been around

I'm looking no further

I've got what I came for

Ain't it sweet what we've found

Since you've been around

Oh, did our love grow

It's trimmed to a hedge row

So shapely and sound

Now I've been getting older

And when I look over my shoulder

I see no end any closer

I've got a lot of time with you

Now that my dream has come true

I need to find a new dream with you

Since you've been around

My head's in a blue sky

I stare at the sun while

There's snow on the ground

Now that my dream has come true

I need to find a new dream with you

Since you've been around

We're alone on a island

Just sipping and smiling

In a lake in the park

I haven't seen an old friend

In I don't even know when

I guess I could call him

But I'd rather stay here with you

Now that my dream has come true

I need to find a new dream with you

It's not your fault

Don't think I blame you

But I must be missing something

If I'm good at nothing but loving you

Now that my dream has come true

I need to find a new dream with you

You're With Me (in Harmony)

If you're out tonight

Think of me

So other men might read your mind

And know that you're with me

If you count tonight

You can count on me

And when I close my eyes I'll find

That you're with me

If I could think of one more reason to call you I'd drop you a line

If I could think of one acceptable question I'll ask you sometime

Leave a note tonight

Write to me

And if your notes in tune with mine

We'll make a harmony

Yesterday Was Alright

Picture this:

You and I on a chariot ride to Mars

Those spinning stars

Are glowing red the fires in our hearts

You don't say?

It's strange to say that I have always felt this way

And this is how I felt just yesterday

Yesterday was alright

You're great to see

A friend in need is who you are to me

Swing on by

We'll talk about the patterns in the skies

And in your mind

We'll take our time because everything has burned outside

This is how I felt just yesterday

Yesterday was alright

Let Me Be The Best of My Love

You tell me that the two of us make a team

Now I think I know what you really mean

You mean I have to row for you, baby

I see myself slipping downstream

If I can't keep you safe I should go away

And find someplace else where I can play

A man so kind

Who keeps his woman satisfied

So let me be the best of my love

And let me be the best for my love

I won't ever rest

I'll be ready

There's always a test

I'm improving on the image the mirror shows

That's why I bought new shoes and cleaned my clothes

I'll look good for you, lady

Gallant as a gentleman goes

I've listened to you tell me what's on your mind

Even though I've heard it a hundred times

I'll be sweet to you lady

You've never met a man so kind

So let me be the best of my love

And let me be the best for my love

I won't ever rest

I'll be ready

There's always a test

And when you wake me I shake and wonder

How my mind has turned has stone

It's my decision to be living the way I do

And I'll never love another like I've loved you

I'm a fool for you, lady

Does it show that I don't have a clue what to do?

So let me be the best of my love

And let me be the best for my love

I won't ever rest

I'll be ready

There's always a test

The Second Half

Together for the 2nd half

The 1st half was fun

But now we've just begun

Together for the 2nd

Two Times

She puts men down like she puts out a smoke

Passes their secrets like dirty jokes

And she'll curse you out in front of her folks

She doesn't think about it once

She's twice the man I am

And that's two times more than I can stand

How I feel doesn't enter her mind

All that she wants is to have a good time

Even at the expense of mine

She doesn't think about it once

She's twice the man I am

And that's two times more than I can stand

Let me tell you she'd strong and she's tall and she's tough

Touches gently but inside she's rough

And you'll never want to call her bluff

She doesn't think about it once

She's twice the man I am

And that's two times more than I can stand

I'm walking away I don't know if she knows

It's bothering me that her heart has been frozen

I have been talking about it but she hasn't told

She doesn't think about it once

She's twice the man I am

And that's two times more than I can stand

Maybe We Can Love Like This Forever

Maybe we can love like this forever

Hold me

Squeeze me

Tell me I'm your man

Maybe we can love like this forever

The Wrong Guy

Such good news

Coming from you

Let me fill your glass

Really review

Because you can't see through

Time at a glance

I'm the one for you

Let me tell you the truth

If you're looking for the high life maybe you've got the wrong guy

It's no disgrace

Just a pay rate

And we can will it to raise

Make no mistake

I'm no misplaced

Runner in race

Tell me that I'm wrong

Then I'll try to make it right

But if you're looking for the high life maybe you've got the wrong guy

It's cold as stone when you leave me alone

And our home is wrecked and rundown when you're not around

I won't deceive you

Or not believe you

In any way at all

I'll tell you straight

Right away

There won't come a day

When the bottom will be top

And then the money will drop

If you're looking for the high life maybe you've got the wrong guy

Picture Book Or Puzzle

There we are

Arm in arm

I kept those good days in a jar

Laughing

Happy

You were funnier than me

I wish that she

could clearly be

Printed for all time

As a picture book or puzzle

Painting, poem in my mind

A bus ride

I watch outside

All alone and I don't mind

The brand new thing

That made her sing

Pluck, strum, and ring

I wish I knew

Just how to keep her

For a rainy day

As a picture book or puzzle

Painting, poem in my mind

I wish that she

could clearly be

Printed for all time

As a picture book or puzzle

Painting, poem in my mind

Let Me Hold On To You

Let me hold on to you

It's one thing I need to do

Let me hold on to you

In the midst of this wild blue poison deluge

When fire is in the sky

And the river is solid ice

Communication has been cauterized

Let me hold on to you

I don't know what world this is

So stay right here next to me

and let me hold on to you

When all that's good is dead

And all of life's love ends

I will desperately need a friend

Let me hold on to you

A good gust could blow my soul

Right out of these skeleton bones

Let me hold on to you

But can we stop a while?

Can I get a cable to connect us?

How long can this last?

How long can I hold on to you?

Nothing To Lose

Sweet and kind

So exciting

Light up my mind like the 4th of July

Ask me another

Don't blow the cover

Just keep on talking she won't think twice

Every day she's got me running circles, now

And every night I'm so alone

I can't shake it she's got her pictures painted behind my eyes

And it drives me wild

Hey

Here we go

I've got nothing to lose if I don't have you

Don't wanna leave you

I wanna please you

So let me please you if it pleases you right

I only know

My only hope

You feel a little how I feel tonight

It's not fair, her finger is on the button, now

One look could make a tame boy wild

Word of mouth I kinda found out that she's out of bounds

But she's still around

Hey

Here we go

I've got nothing to lose if I don't have you

Stoke It

I've been thinking about us, babe

For so very long

So very long

And all we wanted to do, babe

But time rolls along

Time rolls along

So long to our dreams

They have gone

Down in the past

We passed them on

By and by

It's bye-bye

And so long

But can we stoke it?

If there's an ember we'll poke it

Blow with all your might

Create a star in the night

If there's an ember we'll poke it

And stoke it

We've been taking too long, babe

So very long

So very long

Time winks open and shut, babe

Then rolls along

Time rolls along

So long to our dreams

They have gone

Down in the past

We passed them on

By and by

It's bye-bye

And so long

But can we stoke it?

If there's an ember we'll poke it

Blow with all your might

Create a star in the night

If there's an ember we'll poke it

And stoke it

I've been thinking about us, babe

And all we wanted to do, babe

We're taking too long, babe

Time winks open and shut, babe

Jane

Jane doesn't talk too much and she doesn't think of me

See the girl with the long black beautiful hair

See her there with the big eyeglasses she wears

Jane doesn't talk too much and she doesn't think of me

So she says she doesn't like to dance, well OK

Maybe nobody has ever asked her nicely

Well I may

Jane doesn't talk too much and she doesn't think of me

I've been looking for someone just like you

You've been looking for something better to do

Jane doesn't talk too much and she doesn't think of me

Same Old

I don't go to work today

Doing the same thing as I did yesterday

Oh no, same old

I just can't justify dragging myself around this way

Especially for what I've been getting paid

Oh no, same old

If I could only stay at home

If you would stay at home with me

How nice that would be

Just you and me

I think we should hide ourselves away

And let everybody else go about their usual way

For all those it'll be the same old

Let's go on some long holiday

And forget about this long ago place

So long - we'll be long gone

If I could only stay at home

If you would stay at home with me

How nice that would be

Just you and me

What if that get's old?

What if I don't want to go home today?

What if it's the same thing as any other day

If I could only stay at home

If you would stay at home with me

How nice that would be

Just you and me

Affection

We used to walk between these same old rooms

And think about the same old things we used to

If you're singing to the same old tune

I need a change from all your sweet talks and mean tempers

I know you're looking

Just for affection

I know you're saying things you don't really mean

No amount of sugar could cure these wounds

No amount of talk could ever tell the truth

I know you hate to hear that it's not you

I need a different taste - so tired of salt and pepper

I know you're looking

Just for affection

I know you're saying things you don't really mean

Calm down

Loosen up

Step back

Relax

You're not so bad

I know you're looking

Just for affection

I know you're saying things you don't really mean

Back Off My Mind

Honey, it's you I wake up

Trying to shake off

You're hanging off the back of my mind

Pushed off the way

And been replaced

Still you're hanging off the back of my mind

I can't keep making faces

Trade their places

With you hanging off the back of my mind

So get off the back of my mind

If there's only one woman made for one man

You're not the one I would be wanting now

Still you're popping up in places that you're least expected

And you didn't have the courtesy to call

I once held you so tightly

Then I let go and you fell away

But I must have sprouted vines because you hung on the line

And all this time you climbed and climbed

Honey, it's you I wake up

Trying to shake off

You're hanging off the back of my mind

Pushed off the way

And been replaced

Still you're hanging off the back of my mind

I can't keep making faces

Trade their places

With you hanging off the back of my mind

So get off the back of my mind

Cling, cling, mama

Stand by your man

Can I be your loving boy?

This fantasy is getting out of hand

Oh, go away and don't come back again

You stick your fingers where they're not belonging

I didn't know that they could be so strong

Still you've been holding on for so long

And I don't think you'll ever really be gone

Honey, it's you I wake up

Trying to shake off

You're hanging off the back of my mind

Pushed off the way

And been replaced

Still you're hanging off the back of my mind

I can't keep making faces

Trade their places

With you hanging off the back of my mind

So get off the back of my mind

In the Ring

In the ring

We circle, we jab, and we swing

And mirror the moves that we make

Around we go

The bell tolls

The circle's closed

The ring that we're in tomorrow

We circle, we swing, and we dance

And mirror the moves that we make

Around we go

So play the notes

The circle's closed

The ring that we're in tomorrow

We circle and follow the path

And mirror the moves that they made

Around we go

A golden glow

The circle's closed

The ring around my skin tomorrow

Ring-a-ring-a-ring

Ring-a-ring-a-ring

Forgive Me

Forgive me

I didn't mean to look

I didn't mean to touch

I couldn't help myself

It didn't mean a thing

Forgive me

Let's Get Along Again

If I only talk about the bad times

It's because the bad times need talking about

The only trouble I can see with good times

It's them we can't live without

Oh, my honey

Oh, my friend

It's me and you until the very end

So let's get along better

Let's get out of this stormy weather

And let's get along again

If you only see my good side

It's me you don't really love

If you're seeing nothing but my bad side

Then maybe we have enough

So be careful, honey

When the lion's in his den

Or if this rooster gets pecked by hens

So let's get along better

Let's get out of this stormy weather

And let's get along again

Let's talk it over

So we can pal around

Let's get it over with

So we can finally settle down

If we're given nothing but bad breaks

Maybe we can coast along

When we finally hit the high stakes

You and I will share it all

Oh, my honey

Oh, my friend

It's me and you until the very end

So let's get along better

Let's get out of this stormy weather

And let's get along again

I've Changed

It's been so long

We had so much fun

Just hanging around

Where are you now

After you rode through my heart

You left a wake miles apart

Then it settled back to calm

So why would you be alarmed

If I've changed

The way that it was isn't as it is

How I wish we remained the same

Do you sometimes wish we remained the same

It's been so long

But those times are gone

When we haunted here

Then disappeared

And you stirred what's in my cup

Before you drank it up

If you need a little more

Go and find more at the store

Because I've changed

The way that it was isn't as it is

Because I've changed

You and I

When I look back on years before

There you were at my door

When I look here by my side

Here you are as my bride

And when I look ahead aways

There you'll be with the sweetest face

You and I

Thinking about sweet things

You and I

Crossing old salt seas

You and I

Picking out pastries

You and I

You and I

You and I

Hot in the summer

You and I

Catching cold in the winter

You and I

Spring to catch a fall

You and I

You and I

Some way, some how, some time is right now

Some place is right here

Next time is always so near

You and I

Taking it slow

You and I

Driving it fast

You and I

Stopping at the impasse

You and I

You and I

When I lay down to sleep

There you'll be right next to

And when I die you'll dream of dreams

In our lifeline we mined for miles and miles

You and I

Multi-sided

You and I

Look long sighted

You and I

So excited

You and I

You and I
