A short EP called Night Shift at the Hawk Refinery will descend into yr iPod this spring. Here's a taste. Don't Treat Me Like a Stranger was a live staple as far back as '05. This version features an ornate horn arrangement written by Rocketship Park's Josh Kaufman and performed by Jordan McLean of Antibalas.

Video from Josh Kaufman & Nate Martinez Residency

Thanks to everyone who made it out to last Thursday's show at Sycamore. It was something to behold. The Garden continues to grow this Thursday, when Josh and Nate are joined by Dan Brantigan, Mark McAdam, and Bryan Devendorf (The National).

Enjoy these videos from last week. First, Rocketship Park's "See You," filmed by Bernie Dechant

And here's a vid of the group's cover of "Save Me a Place" from Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. Last week's lineup was as follows: Brian Kantor, Kevin Fish, Lauren Balthrop, Dawn Landes, Annie Nero, Mike Brown, Karen Waltuch, Eric Jackson, Nate Martinez, Josh Kaufman. It was dark in there so you can't see much. This was a very special night of music:

Higgins Plays Jersey City Museum, heralded as Jersey's "Finest pop craftsmen"

The Jersey City Museum is quite the posh setting for a rock show in Jersey City — a town in which stages are commodities in the most literal sense. But then, Higgins is not just any local rock band. They are quite probably the finest pop craftsmen with Hudson County roots that we have seen in the last decade or so.

At the special museum “First Fridays” show on Feb. 5, Higgins drew almost equally from their two records, the more recent Zs and 2005’s classic Dear Higgins (described on stage by lead vocalist and guitarist Kevin Fish as “a very Jersey record”) but generally leaned toward the more downtempo numbers. No matter, the crowd was enthralled, and it suited the stately venue. Having begun as just the duo of Fish and drummer Brian Kantor, when playing live, Higgins has experimented with bigger lineups, but now they appear to have settled into a three-to-four piece. The museum gig found the legendary Billy Filo on bass and Jordan Crowell on percussion. The ensemble has become finely tuned, at times bringing to mind Television fused with the Beach Boys.

Opening with “Difference”, the band laid down its hazy Badfinger groove in perfect style. Higgins is all about songs, and the genius pop craftsmanship on display in the likes of “Write It Down,” from their latest record, is not something that is easy to come by. Higgins showed versatility with the Kantor-penned instrumental, “Prelude To A Charly,” which spotlighted Fish making the most of his wah-wah pedal, with Kantor adding some Bonhamesque fills to compliment his usual rock-solid Ringo Starr inspired playing. The setlist was rounded out by a song by Rocketship Park, a Higgins side project, and one mighty fine Turtles cover. The evening wound down with the T-Rexy groove of “Come Again” leading into into perhaps Higgins’ biggest “hit” to date, the achingly woozy “Drop Off,” before closing with the very first track on Zs, “There He Is.”

The evening was opened by former Sub Pop artist Heather Duby, who played a lovely set highlighting her moody vocals and mostly consisting of new material she is working on for an upcoming record. Duby also plays this Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Maxwell’s in Hoboken. And Higgins, who don’t play in Jersey City nearly often enough, appear to be changing that — they have another scheduled show this Saturday, Feb. 20, in the more cozy confines of the Lamp Post. Be there or be square.

Drawing early influence from sources as diverse as Bob Dylan, classic 80's synth pop, traditional Arabic music, punk rock, Nigerian music and Brian Eno, SAADI assembles her musical creation to form what is fundamentally her own. This collision of pop-smarts, exotic influences and fearless eclecticism spawns music which sounds both sophisticated and delightfully accessible.

"It’s one thing to be experimental, quite another to perform a successful experiment. The first is a compulsion, a personality quirk like generosity or reckless driving. The second is something people other than your mother should pay attention to. Boshra al Saadi, a songwriter with visionary aesthetics and a voice in the birthing stages of becoming legendary, from Damascus, Pittsburgh and currently the Lower East Side, is something everybody—even, maybe, your mother—should be paying attention to. For every shitheaded musical algorithm you could throw this artist’s way, like if Cornelius had a sex change and re-recorded Tusk, or if, you know, Regina Spektor had ousted Aaliyah at the Timbaland audition, there is really only one accurate way of encompassing the emotional kick these tracks deliver. Maybe it’s a thing about eponymous musicians, Prince, Madonna, whatever. But here’s the catch: I don’t want to just listen to SAADI songs or go to SAADI shows; I want to be SAADI. After you hear the A and B sides, you’ll probably feel similarly, and we can start a creepy support group for one another where we dress up and write borderline fan fiction."

THE PAPARAZZI Rococo -- Pre-Order and Ampeater Review digital 7-inch

THE PAPARAZZI - ROCOCO is now available for preorder! Every copy of this meticulously crafted 12" vinyl record comes with a CD copy, links to download the album in WAV, FLAC, and 320kbps MP3, and exclusive goodies.

The Paparazzi is the musical pseudonym of songwriter and rock auteur Erik Paparazzi, who has spent the better part of the past decade as a sideman with Cat Power's Dirty Delta Blues. His new record Rococo, recorded back in 2004, will finally see a release on March 16 thanks to Serious Business. Expect a lush and dreamy ride that harnesses the best moves of several purveyors of lost classics and lost weekends: Brian Wilson, Harry Nilsson, and Todd Rundgren.

Back in 2004 when The Paparazzi was performing regularly as a 7 piece band, they recorded the tracks for what was to become Rococo. But something was missing in the final results, and Erik shelved the record until 2007. On the road with Cat Power, he began remixing it on his laptop and wound up deconstructing many of the original performances and arrangements, sometimes drastically reinventing the songs. In so doing he gave new life to the project, and brought us a sonically stunning and wholly immersive record.

This is one to play through. From the first note to the last, Rococo thrusts listeners into a quasi dream state, conjuring rich images and soundscapes while reveling in pop thrills with enough happy accidents to subvert any hint of predictability.

"All of The Paparazzi’s music strikes a perfect balance between the kind of loose, flowing rock music people usually refer to as “shambling,” and really excellent pop craftsmanship, resulting in some perfect jams to tide you over until the warm weather kicks in. The two sides fit perfectly together to form songs that are simultaneously heavy and light, full on the one hand of lyrical puns and lighthearted touches like the little dissonant piano figure that pops up after the closing chords of “Epic Proportions,” and on the other of varied and extended harmonies, guitar riffs that sound classic without sounding old, and rhythmic and metric shifts that keep you on your toes."

1. SAADI - Bad City (Serious Business Remix)
from Bad City 12" EP [SBR42]
Boshra al Saadi's debut release is going to be a 12" EP on very deluxe white vinyl. The A side will consist of "Bad City" and then this Serious Business Remix of that track.

2. THE TWO MAN GENTLEMEN BAND - Me, I Get High on Reefer (live)
from Live in New York! [SBR39]
The Two Man Gentlemen Band had a big year. We threw a party at the Serious Business Music recording studio, invited 50 special Gentlemen fans, and recorded the show for the this LIVE! album. In the days after this show, the Gentlemen shipped off to join up with the Bob Dylan Show. Watch them play "Me, I Get High on Reefer" at Dayton, Ohio's Fifth Third Field before 6,000 fans waiting for Willie Nelson, Mellencamp, and Grampa Bob.

3. THE PAPARAZZI - The Rococo Tape
   from Rococo [SBR40]
Erik Paparazzi's long lost psych-pop mini-opus will finally emerge this year. Allow your ears to be violated by this tiny slice of arty groovy pop. An instant fav!
4. THE OCTAGON - Suicide Kings
from Warm Love and Cool Dreams Forever [SBR41]
We're very lucky to have played a role in the creation of Warm Love and Cool Dreams Forever this year. It is a very special record filled with realest rawest most unironic, literate, and unflinching rock music for people who love rock music.
5. HIGGINS - What Don't You Want?
from Higgins / Andy From Denver - Split 7-inch [SBR31]
The Higgins / Andy From Denver (Marshmallow Coast) split 7" was a treat. Andy is an Elephant 6 legend who has played with the greats (Of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc.) Word on the street is that Andy will be contributing some guitar to Higgins' forthcoming studio platter (the followup to <a href="http://seriousbusinessrecords.com/releases/show/39-Zs target="_blank">Zs.
6. JACK AND THE PULPITS - Francypants
   from Francypants [SBR38]
We continue our mission to introduce your ears to the timeless sounds on tapes lingering in magical boxes in Josh n Annie's apartment for almost 10 years.
7. ROCKETSHIP PARK - Spinning Globes
   from forthcoming LP
The 2nd Rocketship Park record is coming in 2010 and you will be delighted. Here's an early glimpse of Jeff Lynn-ish majesty. Pop doesn't get sweeter!

8. BENJI COSSA - Annie Delia
   from forthcoming LP
The was the first tune we recorded in 2009 for Benji's still underway next record. That's Travis on drums, Josh Kaufman on bass, gtr, keys, and Benji on singing, acoustic, songwriting and vision. Full disclosure: it's a song about his cat.

9. THE UNSACRED HEARTS - Fake Kisses from Ampeater Digital 7-inch
We've been doing The Year in Business since 2007 and every year there is an Unsacred Hearts song on there and it always says "from the forthcoming album The Honor Bar" but as of yet The Honor Bar has not materialized. We just haven't gotten around to putting the finishing touches on it. But thanks to Ben at Ampeater for demanding an Unsacred digi 7-inch for his site. "Fake Kisses" is a rockrockrock song that probably will be too loud to make it on the serene Honor Bar. That's Dave on the komuz, the national instrument of Kyrgyzstan.
10. THE TWO MAN GENTLEMEN BAND - Drip Dryin' (Reprise!) from Drip Dryin' with the Two Man Gentlemen Band [SBR35]
This lark in the studio became the album closer on January '09's Drip Drying with the Two Man Gentlemen Band. Andy Bean, the Councilman and Travis had a maximum R&B power trio in college where they played almost all the songs from Band of Gypsies.

---------------------------------
OTHER YEARS IN BUSINESS...
If you're really into comedy and ladyporn (meaning porn for ladies, not porn of ladies), the 17th is a must-see joint event with Kong Magazine.
